Good Morning, Through the years I have read your column and have enjoyed, disagreed, and admired your writings. Like all of us, you have your opinion and we have ours. Yesterday, I was told by the VA that my income had to be under 38k to receive medical help. Being a veteran was not the gauge, money was. If I was pregnant, illegal, I would have better chance for help. I support politicians that take care of veterans first, do not support killing babies, and that understand security, the welfare of our citizens (legal) first. Like family, help yours and then seek others to help. Priorities today are skewed. The need to make sound decisions are for all concerned (citizens first). Do you open your home door to all without concern? Where would it stop, if you did? Overwhelmed, control would be impossible! As a young Airman, I thought maybe one day if I needed help (medical), I thought I could ask. I did, & no was the answer. I am 55, need help and I am not priority, $is,2others1st,VETS?

immagration is not the problem,; the problem is drugs. America should shoulder a lot the blame. If we don't buy it, they won't sell it. Why is it there is no extensive public programe about not using drugs? Do we have a drug lord here in the US?

Dear Ms. Salinas,
Thank you for your column today (8-30-10) in the Californian. The write about suffering of truly epic proportions. Sadly for me, I find our government must bare much of the blame. Our responsibility more than 100 years but recently President Bush pressured Mexico's new president to increase Mexico's anti-drug trafficking efforts the result is self evident.
Our own "Drug War" coupled with internal demand for marijuana has visited "thugs' rules" upon Mexico's border states.
Additionally by maintaining interdiction policies we are, in reality, "exporting jobs" to Mexico.
Of course the drug war also supports criminal justice system, there by providing jobs.
Thank you for allowing my rant.
Keep up the good work.

I would like to offer a different perspective on your newspaper article about anchor babies. Our local hospital in Arizona near the border has about 50% of the babies born from illegal aliens that wait until they are due and then cross the border. This has obvious financial burdens to the hospital in the near term since no payments are made in these instances. Several hospitals in the area have closed their delivery rooms because they were overrun with anchor baby deliveries. I find your article highly deceptive. We have a rich heritage with Mexico, but let's keep it legal and not abuse the good people on both sides of the border.

Read your column today our newspaper headlined "Undocumented Babies" In my small city 15 miles from the border, I do hospital ministry for our church. This includes visiting the maternity ward.
I can attest that frequently I meet young women from the Mexican side who cross the border expressly to give birth. They then return home to raise their newborn American citizen who will someday be their parents' ticket to American citizenship. This is not what the writers of the 14th amendment had in mind.

In your column today you point to new mothers being in the US for a year before giving birth.Well we know how 1 month was spent and the next 9 are obvious. If we take the no. of children born 340,000 X $10,000 (cost of hospital birth) that equals $3,400,000,000.00.If things don't go well an annual social services of about $10,000.00 is not unreasonable that is another $3,400,000,000.00,over 20 years that is a staggering cost of $68,000,000,000,000.00.That is why Mexico is encouraging people to leave. The problem is why Mexico dislikes Mexicans.

Tonight, 8/24/2010, your reporter in Phoenix said Randy Parraz was the only Hispanic candidate for Senator in the whole United States in 2010. In the follow story, your reporter in Miami reported on the campaign of Marco Rubio, a Cuban-American running for Senator as a Republican. Jorge Ramos did not correct the Phoenix reporter. Please tell him about this. Perhaps the Phoenix guy meant to say Parraz is the only Democrat Hispanic seeking a Senate seat.

Ms. Salinas, I read your syndicated opinion piece entitled "Lawmaker defends his Arizona law". You write "I came to Phoenix to cover the culmination of anti-immigrant law SB 1070, and I ended up in the beginning of it." I want to correct you in that the law is not anti-immigrant but anti-ILLEGAL-immigrant. This is no small matter of semantics. Imagine if one were to describe a proposed law trying to curb sexual assault as an "anti-intercourse law" (sexual assault is an illegal form of sexual intercourse) or a law against grand theft auto as an "anti- car sharing law". I do not mean to invent wild analogies to drive home a point, but you should understand that the entire column you wrote is tainted by such an egregious mis-characterization of the issue in the first sentence--and it does make some good points.

I have heard other newscasters also call it an "anti-immigration law", but this does not make it acceptable to call it in a manner which is dead wrong.

Ms Salinas,
I am a resident of Southern Arizona and my family and I are victims of illegal immigrant crimes. We've had two vehicles stolen and we are in constant worry about what will happen next. Does it really matter who perpetrated these crimes? Crime is crime no matter how you define it. Without laws then what are we? Do we get to select the laws we live by and ignore the others? No we live by all of the laws of land and when the law is broken then we have to pay the price of justice. Is it wrong of me to want to protect my way of life and my right to the American Dream? That is why I support SB1070.

SB1070 allows justice to be served to the law abiding citizens of Arizona.
Your article "Meeting the architect of SB1070" was very one sided and furthermore what does religion have to do with it? I support Sen. Pearce even more so now knowing he's law abiding Mormon. You seem to know something about Mormonism. Are you LDS? If not, would like to receive the missionaries?

Maria,
Everyone is talking about the Arizonia immigration law as being the main reason for all the self deportation of Latinos. No one is talking about the laws passed President Obama and the Democratic congress. That would be the PASS ID act of 2009 and the STATES ID act of 2009. In my State, you can go to the DEPT. of Motor Vehicles web site and view the law and how it came about. When so many Lations came to work following the 2004-5 hurricanes, they found it easy to obtain a driver license. They were able to get credit without documentation. Bought homes business and equipment. Now those first accross in 2004 are finding out that they can't renew their drivers license. Without a license they are loosing their jobs, homes and business's. Many of my customers(Nursery) are leaving because of this and loosing their hard earned assets. They can't get credit to replace aging equipment or re-finace their homes that are re-setting ARMs.Mother can't get on campus to pick up kids.

Hi Maria,
You and others seem to focus mainly on hispanics and their rights when it comes to breaking the laws of this country- illegal entry, identity theft, tax evasion, welfare fraud, etc. Never mind that if an American citizen broke these laws they would have to show ID and would go to court/jail and pay a hefty fines (this also applies to those who come here legally on a visa). I have a solution to the matter. Lets drop all immigration laws and allow people from all the other countries to come to the US and live and work. Let's also change the laws in regards to identity theft and tax evasion and welfare fraud so that it is no longer illegal. This would also apply to US citizens. Now the problem is solved and everybody is being treated equally - US citizens and illegals( oops sorry they would not be illegal any more). I think this would be fair for all. I look forward to not paying my taxes, using your identity to take out loans and applying for and receiving welfare.

Dear Ms. Salinas:
In reading a column in my local newspaper today, July 27, headlined "How to ID an undocumented immigrant," you wrote:
"An article in The Arizona Republic says that the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that there are approximately 39,000 U.S.-born Arizona residents who do not speak English well or at all. If stopped for an infraction, they could be deemed undocumented and taken into custody until their status was cleared."
It is a state law in Arizona (hmmmm probably EVERY state ...) that to drive a car you must have id; it is also state and federal law that when asked, residents must present government-issued id; so it's NOT racial profiling when I get pulled over for speeding and am asked for my identification. When I was in Mexico last month, I was stopped 9 times by Federales asking for my documentation that I was LEGALLY in their country.
Stop being a racist.

It is SB1070, it is professional practice to proofread your comments before posting them.

Most people that support laws such as this one do it because they are scared. They say that undocumented immigrants took away their jobs such as cleaning houses, washing the dishes, etc. But the reality is that most citizens do not want these low-pay jobs... Now they are scared that undocumented immigrants will take their better jobs.

ENDORSING ARIZONA'S LAW IS NOT RACIST IT'S COMMON SENSE

As a third generation American of Mexican descent I am appalled at those "Latinos" that cry or claim racism against anyone who endorses the Arizona law SB 1070. These people are nothing less than lying hypocrites. Mexico enforces their immigration law and they do so with brute force. Mexico will not allow ANY foreigner stay in Mexico unless they have a Visa or Passport. If they do not have either they are detianed, fined and eventually deported UNLESS they have money.

So then how is it that these Latino "activists" (charlatan liars) claim racism or an even greater lie and false label of "Nazism"?

Have these liars no shame or conscience? Apparently, not. They clamor and yell at those of us who want our laws enforced. They act like thugs and then have the gall to falseltystate that they are "victims" when in reality AMERICANS ARE VICTIMS OF ALL THE ABUSE THAT WE TAKE FROM ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION:

Over crowded public schools
Over crowded jails & prisons
Over budgeted city, county and state govts.
Higher crime rate by the large influx of illegals
Over run judicial system and penal system because of this large influx of illegals.

The rising costs and the serious social problems directly associated with illegal immigration are enormous and appear to be never-ending UNLESS we do something and DO IT NOW. We need to stand up against these so called "activist" thugs and take it to the streets, call our city, county, state and federal officials (like Joe Baca, Nancy Pelosi, Boxer and Feinstein, Loretta Sanchex, et al) that have sold us out for cheap Mexican labor and we need to let them know that their career as corrupt politicians is OVER.

We need to take back our state. WE can only do this by speaking up and by taking action. Also, we need to STOP patronizing illegal aliens or ANY place where illegal aliens work.

We can do it.

Or should I say SI SE PUEDE! SI SE PUEDE!

MOVING TO MEXICO

Dear President Obama:
I'm planning to move my family and extended family into Mexico for my
health, and I would like to ask you to assist me.

We're planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. Into Mexico,
and we'll need your help to make a few arrangements.

We plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration
quotas and laws.

I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, would you
mind telling your buddy, President Calderon, that I'm on my way over?

Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

1. Free medical care for my entire family.

2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need,
whether I use them or not.

3. Please print all Mexican government forms in English.

4. I want my grandkids to be taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual)
teachers.

5. Tell their schools they need to include classes on American culture and
history.

6. I want my grandkids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at
their school.

7. Please plan to feed my grandkids at school for both breakfast and lunch.

8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to
government services.

9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico , but, I don't plan to
purchase car insurance, and I probably won't make any special effort to
learn local traffic laws.

10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from
their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has
at least one English-speaking officer.

11. I plan to fly the U.S. Flag from my house top, put U S. Flag decals on
my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any
complaints or negative comments from the locals.

12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have
any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start.

13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely
nice and never say critical things about me or my family, or about the
strain we might place on their economy.

14. I want to receive free food stamps.

15. Naturally, I'll expect free rent subsidies.

16. I'll need Income tax credits so although I don't pay Mexican Taxes, I'll
receive money from the government.

17. Please arrange it so that the Mexican Gov't pays $4,500 to help me buy a
new car.

18. Oh yes, I almost forgot, please enroll me free into the Mexican Social
Security program so that I'll get a monthly income in retirement.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for
all his people who walk over to the U..S. From Mexico . I am sure that
President Calderon won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

Thank you so much for your kind help. You're the man!!!

Hi Mrs. Salinas,

Thank you for your contribution in keeping us informed. I read the comments on this page and found it to be filled with intersting comments. Arizona has become a center of attention of the world and I wish they had not taken the action to approve a law that ultimately will be found unconstitutional. I came to this country when I was twelve years old, went to school, and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. I served four years during the first Gulf War and as many immigrants before me served honorably. It's a shame that ignorance prevails in parts of this country I have adopted as my own and love so much. This country was and always will be a country of immigrants.

Once again, thank you for your service in providing us with information that impact the people of this great country but also of this continent.

Ms. Salinas; I usually read your column in the Vero Beach Press Journal. It is usually only mildly irritating because the only issues you address how Latinos are treated so unfairly. Your recent column which included criticism of the Arizona law has prompted me to enter a comment. Your closing few words; "anti-immigrant law in Arizona" is quite typical of the distorted view that is being expressed by many. Most Americans believe that this country was built by immigrants and is strong because of immigrants. But, there is a distint difference between legal immigrants and illegal immigrants. If we are to be a nation of laws, then the laws must be unheld. A country without borders that are controlled is not a sovereign nation. One hugh difference between the legal immigrants who have helped make this country great their desire to assimilate into the culture of America. The typical illegals now do not want to assimilate. Law abiding Americans will resist this invasion.

I am betting that Mr Milan didn't turn his neighborhood into a trash dump filled with graffiti, which is exactly what happened to ANY neighborhood I have lived in, that became overwhelmed with illegals from Mexico. There is a reason Tijuana looks like it does! I have TWO WONDERFUL neighbors who are from Mexico, one family is 1st generation Americans the other is 2nd, and they BOTH flew AMERICAN flags on Memorial Day! They worked hard to be BECOME LEGAL citizens and I love having them both as neighbors! If you make someone work for something (citizenship) instead of just giving it to them plus all the government money they want, they will appreciate it more! Your head is in the clouds when it comes to the TRUE consequences of millions of ILLEGALS coming over the boarder. Just because you are Latino, doesn't mean you have to stand up for what is WRONG!!!

Is it any wonder why so mnay Americans are sick and tired of the lies and the massive problems associated with illegal immigrayion and namely with the Mexican illegal aliens who make up the majority of the illegal aliens.

Tom, why do you think Mexican Americans and other American Latinos are vehemently opposed to illegal aliens and thier kids getting (also illegal aliens) free college tuition while American kids, kids who score farrrrr better on their S.A.T.s who have far better grades yet are not afforded FREE tuition at our California colleges and universities.

Enough is enough.

When our hosptial emergeny room worked on a first come first serve basis, I sat in the ER for 51/2 hours behind several Mecian women who had babies cutting teeth with a mild tempature increase. They told the clerk "No speak Engish. no money/ins". They saw the doctor. When it was my turn, I told the clerk I had no insurance. He told me he could check my vitial signs and refer me to a hospital who would see me. I called his attention to the Mexican/Engish sign which said (paraphase) No money you still get treated. He told me that was only for the illegal Mexicans, the Govt says we have to treat them, but not you. So being new to AZ at that time (35 Years ago), I learned about Mexian power.

ARIZONA IS THE STANDARD BEARER OF HOW WE SHOULD APPROACH ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

Folks we need to look at Arizona to see how illegal immigration should be dealt with. They are in the process of passing a bill that would make it illegal to be an illegal alien in their state and I applaud them for this. They are doing what our federal govt has failed to do and that's stand up to the massive flow of illegal aliens coming here from Mexico. They have stood up against the corrupt forces of the Mexican govt & the Mexican drug lords, BOTH of whom are always encouraging illegal aliens from Mexico to come here so they can send them more money.

Arizona is doing what California should have donw 25 years ago. IF they had done this California would not be bankrupt. California would not have some of the worst public schools in the country which include the worst test scores, S.A.T.s etc.... Crime and gangs would be down, and a ton of other positives would come from this.

I salute you Arizona

Felicidades, Ms. Salinas, for the passionate column about Washington Legislators going after babies. Thank you for using your platform to speak the truth on many important issues and for sharing your fabulous life story through your book! My single mother raised 2 first generation americans and never accepted 1 penny from Gov't programs. On the contrary,we have contributed in taxes, equal to 20 average tax payers over 30 years. Many of us viewers/readers agree with you without reservations! Keep up the good work! I admire your dedication, drive,& desire to communicate the truth via the media through your hard work. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP OR GET DISCOURAGED! God Bless you and your beautiful daughters!

I read with interest your article in the Desert Sun today, Febuary 23, about citizenship for babies of undocumented parents.

I can agee with you and the law that if one of the married parents is a legal resident of the U. S. any child should also be granted this privilege.

But as a retired Democratic voter I strongly refuse to accept the position that any child of two undocumented people should be considered a U. s. citizen. He or she should be the same as his or her parents, no matter what country they may be. Try checking out the European countries and see how much more strict they are than the U.S. I would encourage all my representatives in goverment to correct this egregious quirk in our laws.

You really haven't fully considered this issue logically. I feel sorry for you.

It is with a high honor to thank Ms Salinas for her hard work and dedication to maintain all of us informed. the Hispanic community needs much help and education, in hope of a better tomorrow.
Sadley we lost many lives at the US border and US officials want to "block the sun with a finger" I served in the Funeral Industry for over 3 decades assisting the Mexican Embassy re-patriating many inmigrants that never conquer the "american Dream" they only conquered the loss of their lives.
Let us make the difference educating our comunity and serve with dignity and respect.
Hats of to Ms salinas and Mr Jorge Ramos for their arduos labor that they provide.
Bleesings to you all

Hola, my friends, it is pretty much clear to me and us Christians that open borders, amnesty and free trade are the true gates that will open up our economy so as we can meet a better tomorrow and truly leave a better today in the past as the present clears its glorious way. Yes my friends, Obama, the Democrats and of course Calderon will make it happen! YES! SALUDOS

Sra. Maria Elena:

Hi Maria,
My name's Danny, and I'm a professor of journalism at Cal State Long Beach. I am also the adviser for our NAHJ chapter.
We were interested in visiting the L.A. studios of Univision for a tour, but I'm having trouble reaching someone in there for that. Could you help? Could you suggest someone I could talk to, please? Students are really excited about the prospect!
Thanks in advance, and have a great end of week!
Danny.

Hola Mrs. Salinas,

Gracias!

Now I manage a multimillion private practice, listening to my caucasian co workers whine on how can I afford to travel so much, going to Europe and taking cruises all over the world, or buying my 2 kids all those expensive presents for Christmas.
Do I live like this because ou you? do I owe "you" taxpayers any of this?.. NO!
Am I a rare case?? no! I can introduce you to dozens of people with the same history and I can also introduce you to caucasian people born and raised here with all the privilages and benefits living in trailer parks living out of walfare and selling drugs or asking "me" a Mexican, for some spare change at a gas station.
And is their living condition because of me?? No!!
Again.. IGNORANCE!! and is because this ignorance that you people are afraid!! and see us as a treath.
We are here, and we are going no where! So yes be "AFRAID". we will take over, and the same way you have treat "us" you and your kids would be treated.
